5:30 PM Mineral Identification and Swap Shop
“Rock Doctor” Clinic: Starts at 5:30, ends at 6:30 PM. Members are free to bring in a reasonable number of samples or specimens to be identified by the expert mineralogists in the club.
“Swap Shop”: Calling all collectors! The OVMC Swap Shop is open for all members (adults and children). Mike and Tara will have several treasures to trade including small crystals, fossils, polished rocks and the occasional plastic dino! Donations towards the Swap collection is appreciated! Local and international samples accepted. No large samples please.

Speaker: David Joyce, well-known mineral collector and dealer
Topic: Adventures of a Canadian Collecting Minerals on Arizona
David Joyce has been a mineral collector since he was 12 years old, growing up in rock and mineral bereft Scarborough, Ontario, Canada. He left Scarborough at 19 years of age to attend the Haileybury School of Mines and upon graduation worked across Canada in the explosives and mining businesses. He later worked for mining and engineering contractors in the field of designing and building mining complexes, internationally, and most recently was Vice President, Business Development for SNC-Lavalin Engineers and Constructors. David was an adjunct Professor at the University of Toronto for eight years, teaching “Explosives and Fragmentation in Mining” in the engineering faculty. He volunteers at both the Alfie Norville Gem and Mineral Museum, as well as the Royal Ontario Museum. David Joyce has had a mineral business either full or part time for over 40 years and recently retired after many years as a full time mineral dealer. His son, Daniel, has happily taken over the mineral business, www.djoyceminerals.com.
David is a resident of Ontario who spends half of the year in Arizona. Guess which half!? While there, he is fortunate to be able to collect minerals at many beautiful, interesting and historic sites. These are the kinds of places that beautiful mineral crystal specimens come from! This presentation will chronicle some of the more interesting and productive sites that he has visited. It is a travelogue presentation showing trips to the locations, unusual happenings, flora, fauna, collecting techniques and the minerals collected.
