OVMC March 2025 Meeting – The Geological History of Southern Ontario

March 20 @ 5:30 pm 8:00 pm

5:30 PM Mineral Identification

“Rock Doctor” Clinic: Starts at 5:30, ends at 6 PM. Members are free to bring in a reasonable number of samples or specimens to be identified by the expert mineralogists in the club. This has been a very popular activity for the membership (at times exceeding our capacity to deal with everyone present!).

6:00 PM Meeting

Speaker: Laura Mancini, P.Geo, Southern Regional Resident Geologist, Ontario Geological Survey

Topic: The Geological History of Southern Ontario

Laura’s presentation will cover the formation of Laurentia and the Grenville Province starting in the Proterozoic around 2.5 billion years ago through the Quaternary Period. The presentation will briefly cover the variety of mineral products that are mined from 3 very distinct geological areas which are the Paleozoic, Central Metasedimentary Belt, and the Central Gneiss Belt.

Upon completing an M.Sc. at the University of Waterloo in 2011, Laura worked for Lake Shore Gold Corp as an Exploration Geologist for eight years on several surface and underground projects during an exciting time in gold exploration and mining. She began working with the Ontario Geological Survey Team in March 2020, as southern Ontario’s Regional Resident Geologist. Laura enjoys participating in geoscience outreach and education, particularly teaching about the amazing geological history and complex geology of Southern Ontario.
