** NOTE: Mineral collecting field trips will begin again in the Spring. Click on Previous Events below to browse past field trips, meetings and other events. Come to our monthly meetings which are held every second Thursday each month. Bring your rocks and minerals to have experts identify or exchange for other minerals plus attend fascinating presentations. Long Lake Zinc Mine Field Trip #2 (Evening)

October 25 @ 4:00 pm 8:00 pm

The Long Lake Zinc Mine (Sometimes called the Richardson Mine) started in 1897 with a number of mining operations in the early and mid 1900s focusing on zinc and lead ores.

Minerals that can be found in the mine dumps (as shown above) are: aragonite, calcite, chondrodite, diopside, dolomite, hydrozincite, smithsonite, galena, chalcopyrite, molybdenite, pyrite, pyrrhotite, quartz, sphalerite and ‘garnet group’ (Italics: fluorescent minerals).

We will have dark boxes to view fluorescent minerals but since night comes early in late October, we expect to see the many fluorescent minerals glowing over the whole area.

Parking is very close to the site.
