DESCRIPTION:The Yates Mine was originally worked in 1906-07 for mica and fluorite and later in the 40’s and 50’s for fluorite and uranothorite. \n \nPossible minerals to be uncovered are: allanite\, apatite\, calcite\, diopside\, fluorite\, microcline\, molybdenite\, phlogopite mica\, pyroxene\, scapolite thorianite\, titanite\, tremolite and zircon. \nParking is at the gate to the property. Since the gate will be locked\, we must go as a group so please be there at 10:00 am. Direction details will be sent to attendees. \nThere is a 20-25 minute walk through the woods on an uneven road slightly uphill. SUMMARY:Long Lake Zinc Mine Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:The Long Lake Zinc Mine (Sometimes called the Richardson Mine) started in 1897 with a number of mining operations in the early and mid 1900s focusing on zinc and lead ores. \n \nMinerals that can be found in the mine dumps (as shown above) are: aragonite\, calcite\, chondrodite\, diopside\, dolomite\, hydrozincite\, smithsonite\, galena\, chalcopyrite\, molybdenite\, pyrite\, pyrrhotite\, quartz\, sphalerite and ‘garnet group’ (Italics: fluorescent minerals). \n \nWe will have dark boxes to view fluorescent minerals.  Bring UV lights – longwave 365nm and if owned\, shortwave 264nm. \nParking is very close to the site. \nSee our Blog Article for tools and what to bring: Gearing Up: Must-Have Tools for the Aspiring Rockhound. \nPrice: $20.00 – $40.00 The owner has decided to charge $20/adult person + $20/bucket collected
