SUMMARY:Beryl Pit Field Trip #2
DESCRIPTION:The Beryl Pit is an open pit with a large field of mine dump material that has been bulldozed for easier finding. Originally\, beryl was discovered in 1897 then the mine opened in the 1920s. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere are a variety of minerals that can be found here including beryl\, pyrite\, columbite\, euxenite\, tourmaline\, fluorite\, various quartz\, aquamarine\, mica\, feldspar including albite peristerite (moonstone)\, allanite and many more. Most of these were formed in a granite pegmatite about 1.2 billion years ago up to 20 km deep under the Grenville mountains which have all eroded away. \n\n\n\nWe will meet at the Quadeville Grocery Store at 10:00 am and then proceed by car to the Beryl Pit parking area. There is a 0.75 km walk to the collecting area which is fairly open. Bring lunch\, water and mosquito repellant. There are no washrooms at the Pit but Quadeville does have a public washrooms. \n\n\n\nThere are two collecting approaches: \n\n\n\n\nEasy: Digging and raking through the mine dumps which is mainly loose soil mixed with minerals\n\n\n\nChallenging: Using a sledge or chisels to break open big rocks to find fresh mineral specimens.\n\n\n\n\nSee our Blog Article for tools and what to bring: Gearing Up: Must-Have Tools for the Aspiring Rockhound \n\n\n\nThe owners of the Beryl Pit charge the following fees which we will collect at the Quadeville store: \n\n\n\n\nAdult – $20.00\n\n\n\nStudent – $15.00\n\n\n\nChildren under 6 – Free

Members are free to bring in a reasonable number of samples or specimens to be identified by the expert mineralogists in the club. This has been a very popular activity for the membership (at times exceeding our capacity to deal with everyone present!). \n\n\n\n“Swap Shop”: Calling all collectors! The OVMC Swap Shop is open for all members (adults and children). Mike and Tara will have several treasures to trade including small crystals\, fossils\, polished rocks and the occasional plastic dino!  Donations towards the Swap collection is appreciated! Local and international samples accepted. No large samples please. \n\n\n\n6:30 PM Meeting \n\n\n\n Speaker: Michael Bainbridge\, Curator of Minerology\, Canadian Museum of Nature \n\n\n\nTopic:  Mineral Photography  \n\n\n\nMichael Bainbridge is the Curator of Mineralogy at the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa and one of the top mineral photographers in the world. Michael previously worked as a commercial mineral photographer for many years and his photographs have been widely published. His wonderful photographs and written descriptions of the exceptional Bill Pinch mineral collection\, purchased by the Museum in 1989\, were published in his book “The Pinch Collection at the Canadian Museum of Nature” in 2020. Come out and learn some of the techniques for photographing your mineral collection from one of the best!

SUMMARY:Long Lake Zinc Mine Field Trip #2 (Evening)
DESCRIPTION:The Long Lake Zinc Mine (Sometimes called the Richardson Mine) started in 1897 with a number of mining operations in the early and mid 1900s focusing on zinc and lead ores. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMinerals that can be found in the mine dumps (as shown above) are: aragonite\, calcite\, chondrodite\, diopside\, dolomite\, hydrozincite\, smithsonite\, galena\, chalcopyrite\, molybdenite\, pyrite\, pyrrhotite\, quartz\, sphalerite and ‘garnet group’ (Italics: fluorescent minerals). \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe will have dark boxes to view fluorescent minerals but since night comes early in late October\, we expect to see the many fluorescent minerals glowing over the whole area. \n\n\n\nParking is very close to the site. \n\n\n\nSee our Blog Article for tools and what to bring: Gearing Up: Must-Have Tools for the Aspiring Rockhound. Bring UV lights – longwave 365nm and if owned\, shortwave 264nm. \n\n\n\n$20.00 – $40.00 The owner has decided to charge $20/person + $20/bucket collected
