SUMMARY:OVMC September 2025 Meeting - The Fabulous World of Fluorescent Minerals
DESCRIPTION:5:30 PM Mineral Identification and Kids Corner \n\n\n\n“Rock Doctor” Clinic: Starts at 5:30\, ends at 6 PM. Members are free to bring in a reasonable number of samples or specimens to be identified by the expert mineralogists in the club. This has been a very popular activity for the membership (at times exceeding our capacity to deal with everyone present!). \n\n\n\n“Kids Corner”: We will now be having a table set aside for children to learn the basics of mineral identification and other related activities. Thank you to Tara Conroy for setting this up! \n\n\n\n6:00 PM Meeting \n\n\n\nSpeaker: Bob Boisvert\, Fluorescent Minerals Expert \n\n\n\nTopic: The Fabulous World of Fluorescent Minerals \n\n\n\nBob is an expert in the field of fluorescent minerals and will share his knowledge through a newly updated presentation as well as hands-on demonstrations of various minerals and the different wavelengths of UV light.  Our local geological region: Grenville Province is rich in minerals that fluoresce. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us as we explore the wonders of fluorescence in minerals. \n\n\n\nLocation and Directions: Canadian Museum of Nature\, 240 McLeod St.\, Ottawa. Enter through the main entrance and turn left\, go to the end of the hall past the cafeteria

SUMMARY:1 or 2 Day Titanite Hill and CN Rock Pile Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Note change in plans to allow those only interested in a 1-day trip to Titanite Hill. Many members have already visited the CN Rock Pile so we have now scheduled Titanite Hill on Monday. \n\n\n\nLocated about 25 minutes from Bancroft\, Titanite Hill is part of the same local geology as the famous\, now closed to the public: Bear Lake Diggings which produced many fine specimens of amphibole and apatite crystals plus others. \n\n\n\nMonday: Titanite Hill\n\n\n\nOn the first day\, we will meet at the Mineral Museum in downtown Bancroft at 10:00 am.\, then proceed to the town of Tory Hill (about 30 minutes) which is close to Titanite Hill. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTitanite Hill has produced wonderful specimens of not only amphiboles and fluoroapatite but also titanite\, biotite\, feldspar\, rare fluoro-richterite\, quartz\, calcite\, and others. \n\n\n\nTitanite Hill parking is down a small road from Tory Hill village with limited spaces so car pooling is advised. Digging\, following calcite veins\, can be done at the bottom of the hill or on the hill but realize past rockhounds have already removed many specimens; however good finds are still happening. The best opportunities for better specimens is now at the top which requires a fairly strenuous uphill climb (no paths so no wagons). Recommended tools are hand rake and trowel to extend past digging. A shovel to remove the surface soil in new digging areas would be very helpful. Even a soil sifter is handy to find smaller specimens caught in the soil. \n\n\n\nBring a lunch and drinks. \n\n\n\nTuesday: CN Rock Pile and Other Exploration Options\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMineral at the CN Rock Pile are very different than Titanite Hill. The rock came from the Golding-Keene Quarry and contains a wide variety including: nepheline\, albite\, peristerite\, biotite\, cancrinite (fluorescent)\, zircons\, graphite\, plagioclase feldspar\, sodalite\, hackmanite (fluorescent) and others. \n\n\n\nWe will meet at 10:00 am at entrance to the CN Rock Pile (Across the street from the Mineral Museum). Parking is right next to the CN Rock Pile so it is very easy to start finding minerals. Since the top of the CN Rock Pile has been picked over\, digging down a little will produce better specimens. A couple of hours at the Rock Pile allows members to get to visit the Museum and two mineral stores: Lakeside Gems and Sodalite Mine (with its Rock Farm). It is fun to visit the CN Rock Pile after dark to see the fluorescent minerals glowing under UV lights (recommended 365 nm). \n\n\n\nNote: You are free to return to Titanite Hill if you would like on Day 2. \n\n\n\nThere are two motels in town that are reasonably priced if staying for the two days.

SUMMARY:DeWitts Corner Spinel Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:DeWitts Corner\, south of Perth\, is known as one of the finest spinel crystal locations in Canada. It was originally a calcite mine for feeding a local kiln back in the 1840s. \n\n\n\nNote: View Doug Scott’s Blog article about Dewitts Corner being lost and found again for a fascinating deep dive. \n\n\n\nMembers of the Ottawa Valley Mineral Club collecting at the DeWitts Corners spinel pits\, September 2024\n\n\n\nOther minerals besides spinel that may be found include calcite\, corundum\, rare\, hogbomite\, magnetite\, hornblende\, diopside and scapolite. \n\n\n\nAfter about an hour’s drive from Ottawa and a short easy walk\, we will arrive at the spinel pits. Please go the Tim Hortons in Perth on the main Route 7: 98 Dufferin St\, Perth\, ON K7H 3A7 as we will meet there 10:00 am and then follow each other to the location.
