Striking brilliant colours are what make minerals so captivating and sought after. Yet\, sometimes\, the colour fades. In this talk we will explore the origins of colours and colour change in minerals. Some examples include why calcite fluoresces in a wide range of colours (but\, sometimes\, doesn’t fluoresce at all) and why pink kunzite or fluorite can turn into pale grey or colourless. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nP.S. SUMMARY:Beryl Pit Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:The Beryl Pit is an open pit with a large field of mine dump material that has been bulldozed for easier discovery. Originally\, beryl was discovered in 1897 then the mine opened in the 1920s. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere are a variety of minerals that can be found here including beryl\, pyrite\, columbite\, euxenite\, tourmaline\, fluorite\, various quartz\, aquamarine\, mica\, feldspar including albite peristerite (moonstone)\, allanite and many more. Most of these were formed in a granite pegmatite about 1.2 billion years ago up to 20 km deep under the Grenville mountains which have all eroded away. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe will meet at the Quadeville Grocery Store at 10:00 am and then proceed by car to the Beryl Pit parking area. There is a 0.75 km walk to the collecting area which is fairly open. Bring lunch\, water and mosquito repellant. No large samples please. \n6:10 PM Door Prizes \n6:20 PM Pinch Award Presentation \n\n\nIn recognition of his many contributions to the science of mineralogy\, Quintin Wight has been awarded the Pinch Medal by the Mineralogical Association of Canada (The MAC) and this prestigious award will be presented to Quintin in a brief ceremony at the May 14th meeting of the OVMC. Last year\, our own Michael Bainbridge\, Curator of Mineralogy at the Canadian Museum of Nature won the Carnegie Mineralogical Award so that’s two in a row for members of the OVMC!\n\n\n\n6:30 PM Meeting \nSpeaker: Col (Ret) Quintin Wight\, CD\, MA and World-Renowned Micromounter \nTopic: The Scientific Value of Micromounting \n\n\nFor a long time micromounters have felt rather scorned by the collectors of large\, showy pieces who spend thousands of dollars on their collections. Museum curators also tend to dislike micromounts because they are difficult to display. This talk demonstrates that micromounters have every reason to be proud of their accomplishments\, and introduces some of the people and institutions that are keeping the science of mineralogy alive and up to date through micromounting. In the last few years\, micromounters have discovered more than 270 new mineral species. How many have the cabinet collectors found?\nRhodochrosite from Mt. St. Hilaire\n\nRhodochrosite 70x Magnification\n\nOur speaker is the illustrious Mr. Quintin Wight\, one of the world’s premier experts in the field of micro-minerals\, those mineral specimens which are only readily visible under a microscope and are often more spectacular in their form than the minerals large enough to be seen without magnification.  Quintin has been a mineral collector\, micromounter and photomicrographer for more than 50 years. During that time\, he has published more than 200 articles\, on mineral subjects. He has also given more than 205 presentations to mineral groups across North America\, and in England\, Belgium\, Italy\, Switzerland\, Tanzania\, and New Zealand. Inducted to the Micromounters’ Hall of Fame in 1990\, he now coordinates that organization on behalf of the Baltimore Mineral Society. His book\, The Complete Book of Micromounting\, was published in 1993\, and the mineral quintinite was named in his honor in 1997.\n\n\n  \n\n

SUMMARY:Burgess Mine and Logan Cuts Field Trip - Cancelled
DESCRIPTION:This trip has been cancelled. The owners of Burgess Mine no longer allow mineral collecting because of some past rockhounding people left garbage and did not respect the property. \nThe Burgess Mine and Logan Cuts is part of the same mountainous area as the Craigmont Corundum Mine.  We can drive to the Burgess workings (close by parking area) and try to find corundum and other minerals.  After an hour or two of local exploration\, those up for a challenge will hike about 2.5 km on a rough wagon trail to Logan Cuts which has much better potential for good corundum finds.  This trip will be lead by Chris Fouts\, Bancroft Geologist\, who is very familiar with the area. \nThe rocks found here are syenitic gneisses & pink/red syenite pegmatite which contain spindle-like crystals.  Corundum was mined in the early 1900’s.  Other minerals that can be found are:  magnetite\, allanite\, biotite\, epidote\, muscovite\, pyrite and pyroxene.  Less common finds would be rutile\, calcite\, scapolite\, titanite\, uraninite and zircon. \n  \nNote:  There is a pond near the Burgess dumps so parents must take close care of younger children.  As well\, the walk to Logan Cuts is not recommended for young children since it is uphill and lengthy. \nThe corundum crystals are often embedded in matrix in larger rocks/boulders although pieces may be found relatively easy.  A good rock hammer or even a hand sledge with chisel is advised to produce carry-out sizes.  A hand rake also is handy.  Since you are along way from the cars\, bring lots of water. \nWe will meet at MacArthur Mills at 10:00 am and proceed in a convoy from there. \nPrice:  $20/adult. \n

SUMMARY:Miller Property Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:The Miller Property includes the Smart Mine established around 1880. Apatite was the main target because of its phosphate used as fertilizer. \n \nThe main minerals that can be found are apatite\, fluorapatite\, calcite\, biotite\, microcline felspar\, amazonite\, titanite and zircon. \nParking is fairly close to the diggings although low cars may want to park a little further away. It can be quite damp after a rain at the Miller Property which will increase mosquitos so come prepared. SUMMARY:Amherst Island Fossil Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Amherst Island is located just south of Kingston. We will meet at the Ferry at 10:00 am. After a short ferry ride at 10:30 am\, we plan to visit two fossil locations: 11:00 am at Topsy Farms and in the afternoon at the far south-east end of island near the bird sanctuary. \nNote:  We did attempt to find a fossil location near Ottawa but quarries are getting more and more restrictive while the other possible fossil locations are on property where collecting is not allowed.  We are in discussions with our sister club: EONS. \nLast year the group who went to Amherst Island did find some excellent fossils and the Topsy Farm is willing to let us go on their private beach. \nEnjoy the unique Irish dry stone walls along the drive. \nOther activities available are: \n\nBeautiful sandy beach: Back Beach Park and Sand Beach Wetlands Conservation Area\nNeilson Store Museum\nOwl Woods\nKingston Field Naturalists Bird Sanctuary\nIn Stella: General Store\, Back Kitchen Restaurant\nTopsy Farms: meet the animals\, view their products\n\n \n \nFossils include crinoids\, brachiopods\, bryozoan\, snails\, corals\, trilobites about 400-450 million years old. It is a short walk from parking areas.  A detailed ID guide will provided to all attendees.

Reserve a motel in Bancroft early if staying overnight. \nPlease register at the bottom of this page for each day. \nSaturday:  Schickler Fluorite Occurrence and Desmont Mine\nNear Wilberforce (about 30 minutes from Bancroft) are two mineral locations.  We will meet at the Bancroft Mineral Museum at 10:00 am on Saturday and then drive to the Desmont Mine in the morning and those that want to go to the Schickler Fluorite Occurrence can go in the afternoon. Schickler is rather small so space is limited to 12. \nMinerals found at Desmont: Albite\, amphibole\, biotite\, calcite\, diopside\, edenite\, garnet\, limestone\, magnetite\, microcline\, molybdenite\, pyrite\, pyroxene\, pyrrhotite\, smoky quartz\, serpentine\, sphalerite\, rare stillwellite\, thorite\, titanite\, uraninite.  Desmont Mine is a granite pegmatite and was originally mined for uranium in the 1950s. \n \nMinerals found at Schickler:   Augite\, calcite\, fluorapatite\, fluorite\, pyrite\, microcline\, scapolite\, thorite and titanite and yttriaite-y. Fluorites range from clear to deep violet.  There a 15-min walk through beautiful woods to get to the Schickler Occurrence from its parking lot. \n \nThere are charge to visit these locations; however the Municipality of Highlands East requires that each attendee over 18 has to complete their online form at: Mineral Collection Application – Highlands East. Please do so before the visit. \nSaturday Evening: CN Rock Pile\nMinerals at the CN Rock Pile are very different than Desmont mine\, Schickler and Titanite Hill. The rocks came from the Golding-Keene Quarry and contains a wide variety including: nepheline\, albite\, peristerite\, biotite\, cancrinite (fluorescent)\, zircons\, graphite\, plagioclase feldspar\, sodalite\, hackmanite (fluorescent) and others. \n \nWe will meet at 7:30 pm at the entrance to the CN Rock Pile (Follow trial/road across the street from the Mineral Museum). Parking is right next to the CN Rock Pile so it is very easy to start finding minerals. Since the top of the CN Rock Pile has been picked over\, digging down a little will produce better specimens. Evening is ideal to find great bright yellow-orange fluorescent minerals so bring along-wave UV (365 nm). \nSunday: Titanite Hill\nLocated about 25 minutes from Bancroft\, Titanite Hill is part of the same local geology as the famous\, now closed to the public: Bear Lake Diggings which produced many fine specimens of amphibole and apatite crystals plus others. \nOn the Sunday\, we will meet at Lakeside Gems at 10:00 am. (stay on Highway 28 through Bancroft and drive about 8 minutes)\, then proceed to the town of Tory Hill (about 20 minutes) which is close to Titanite Hill.  Lakeside Gems will lead the trip to Titanite Hill. \n \nTitanite Hill has produced wonderful specimens of not only amphiboles and fluoroapatite but also titanite\, biotite\, feldspar\, rare fluoro-richterite\, quartz\, calcite\, and others. \nTitanite Hill parking is down a small road from Tory Hill village with limited spaces so car pooling is advised. Digging\, following calcite veins\, can be done at the bottom of the hill or on the hill but realize past rockhounds have already removed many specimens; however good finds are still happening. The best opportunities for better apatite specimens is now at the top which requires a fairly strenuous uphill climb (no paths so no wagons). Recommended tools are hand rake and trowel to extend past digging. A shovel to remove the surface soil in new digging areas would be very helpful. Even a soil sifter is handy to find smaller specimens caught in the soil. \nBring a lunch and drinks. \nThere is a charge of $15.00 for adults to be collected onsite.

SUMMARY:Parker Spinel Occurrence Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:The former Parker Mine in Quebec just north of Ottawa was mined in the early 1900s for mica in pyroxenite but is more famous for excellent crystals of olivine and spinel.  Although a wide variety of mineral are possibly found\, we are seeking spinel and forsterite (magnesium end member of olivine group).  Hypersthene pyroxene\, calcite\, phlogopite mica\, amphibole\, magnetite and other minerals are here. \n \nThe black spinel crystals are found in carbonates. \nParking and space is limited so register early. \n

SUMMARY:Beryl Pit Field Trip #2
DESCRIPTION:The owners of the Beryl Pit have turned over the dumps/tailings so fresh minerals are more available. \nThe Beryl Pit is an open pit with a large field of mine dump material that has been bulldozed for easier discovery. Originally\, beryl was discovered in 1897 then the mine opened in the 1920s. \n \nThere are a variety of minerals that can be found here including beryl\, pyrite\, columbite\, euxenite\, tourmaline\, fluorite\, various quartz\, aquamarine\, mica\, feldspar including albite peristerite (moonstone)\, allanite and many more. Most of these were formed in a granite pegmatite about 1.2 billion years ago up to 20 km deep under the Grenville mountains which have all eroded away.  If one is lucky\, blue beryl / aquamarine can be found. \nWe will meet at the Quadeville Grocery Store at 10:00 am and then proceed by car to the Beryl Pit parking area. There is a 0.75 km walk to the collecting area which is fairly open. Bring lunch\, water and mosquito repellant. DESCRIPTION:DeWitts Corner\, south of Perth\, is known as one of the finest spinel crystal locations in Canada. It was originally a calcite mine for feeding a local kiln back in the 1840s. \nNote: View Doug Scott’s Blog article about Dewitts Corner being lost and found again for a fascinating deep dive. \nMembers of the Ottawa Valley Mineral Club collecting at the DeWitts Corners spinel pits\, September 2024 \nOther minerals besides spinel that may be found include calcite\, corundum\, rare\, hogbomite\, magnetite\, hornblende\, diopside and scapolite. \nAfter about an hour’s drive from Ottawa and a short easy walk\, we will arrive at the spinel pits. Please go the Tim Hortons in Perth on the main Route 7: 98 Dufferin St\, Perth\, ON K7H 3A7 as we will meet there 10:00 am and then follow each other to the location.

SUMMARY:Long Lake Zinc Mine Field Trip #2 (Evening)
DESCRIPTION:This trip is planned to be there at dusk or after dark to see and locate the best fluorescent minerals. \nThe Long Lake Zinc Mine (Sometimes called the Richardson Mine) started in 1897 with a number of mining operations in the early and mid 1900s focusing on zinc and lead ores.  It is world-renowned as a great place to find fluorescent minerals. \n \nMinerals that can be found in the mine dumps (as shown above) are: aragonite\, calcite\, chondrodite\, diopside\, dolomite\, hydrozincite\, smithsonite\, galena\, chalcopyrite\, molybdenite\, pyrite\, pyrrhotite\, quartz\, sphalerite and ‘garnet group’ (Italics: fluorescent minerals). \nWe will have dark boxes to view fluorescent minerals but since night comes early in late October\, we expect to see the many fluorescent minerals glowing over the whole area. \n \nParking is very close to the site. \nSee our Blog Article for tools and what to bring: Gearing Up: Must-Have Tools for the Aspiring Rockhound.
