SUMMARY:OVMC May 2026 Meeting - The Scientific Value of Micromounting and Pinch Award
DESCRIPTION:Join us and win door prizes! \n5:30 PM Mineral Identification and Swap Shop \n“Rock Doctor” Clinic: Starts at 5:30\, ends at 6:15 PM. Members are free to bring in a reasonable number of samples or specimens to be identified by the expert mineralogists in the club. This has been a very popular activity for the membership (at times exceeding our capacity to deal with everyone present!). \n“Swap Shop”: Calling all collectors! The OVMC Swap Shop is open for all members (adults and children). Mike and Tara will have several treasures to trade including small crystals\, fossils\, polished rocks and the occasional plastic dino!  Donations towards the Swap collection is appreciated! Local and international samples accepted. No large samples please. \n6:10 PM Door Prizes \n6:20 PM Pinch Award Presentation \n\n\nIn recognition of his many contributions to the science of mineralogy\, Quintin Wight has been awarded the Pinch Medal by the Mineralogical Association of Canada (The MAC) and this prestigious award will be presented to Quintin in a brief ceremony at the May meeting of the OVMC. The last winner of this medal was our own Michael Bainbridge so that’s two in a row for members of the OVMC!\n\n\n\n6:30 PM Meeting \nSpeaker: Col (Ret) Quintin Wight\, CD\, MA and World-Renowned Micromounter \nTopic: The Scientific Value of Micromounting \n\n\nFor a long time micromounters have felt rather scorned by the collectors of large\, showy pieces who spend thousands of dollars on their collections. Museum curators also tend to dislike micromounts because they are difficult to display. This talk demonstrates that micromounters have every reason to be proud of their accomplishments\, and introduces some of the people and institutions that are keeping the science of mineralogy alive and up to date through micromounting. In the last few years\, micromounters have discovered more than 270 new mineral species. How many have the cabinet collectors found?\nRhodochrosite from Mt. St. Hilaire\n\nRhodochrosite 70x Magnification\n\nOur speaker is the illustrious Mr. Quintin Wight\, one of the world’s premier experts in the field of micro-minerals\, those mineral specimens which are only readily visible under a microscope and are often more spectacular in their form than the minerals large enough to be seen without magnification.  Quintin has been a mineral collector\, micromounter and photomicrographer for more than 50 years. During that time\, he has published more than 200 articles\, on mineral subjects. He has also given more than 205 presentations to mineral groups across North America\, and in England\, Belgium\, Italy\, Switzerland\, Tanzania\, and New Zealand. Inducted to the Micromounters’ Hall of Fame in 1990\, he now coordinates that organization on behalf of the Baltimore Mineral Society. His book\, The Complete Book of Micromounting\, was published in 1993\, and the mineral quintinite was named in his honor in 1997.\n\n\n  \n\n

SUMMARY:Beryl Pit Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:The Beryl Pit is an open pit with a large field of mine dump material that has been bulldozed for easier discovery. Originally\, beryl was discovered in 1897 then the mine opened in the 1920s. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere are a variety of minerals that can be found here including beryl\, pyrite\, columbite\, euxenite\, tourmaline\, fluorite\, various quartz\, aquamarine\, mica\, feldspar including albite peristerite (moonstone)\, allanite and many more. Most of these were formed in a granite pegmatite about 1.2 billion years ago up to 20 km deep under the Grenville mountains which have all eroded away. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWe will meet at the Quadeville Grocery Store at 10:00 am and then proceed by car to the Beryl Pit parking area. There is a 0.75 km walk to the collecting area which is fairly open. Bring lunch\, water and mosquito repellant. There are no washrooms at the Pit but Quadeville does have a public washrooms. \n\n\n\nThere are two collecting approaches: \n\n\n\nEasy: Digging and raking through the mine dumps which are mainly loose soil mixed with minerals. \n\n\n\nChallenging: Using a sledge or chisels to break open big rocks to find fresh mineral specimens. \n\n\n\nSee our Blog Article for tools and what to bring: Gearing Up: Must-Have Tools for the Aspiring Rockhound \n\n\n\nThe owners of the Beryl Pit charge the following fees which we will collect at the Quadeville store: \n\n\n\nAdult – $20.00 \n\n\n\nStudent – $15.00 \n\n\n\nChildren under 6 – Free

Striking brilliant colours are what make minerals so captivating and sought after. Yet\, sometimes\, the colour fades. In this talk we will explore the origins of colours and colour change in minerals. Some examples include why calcite fluoresces in a wide range of colours (but\, sometimes\, doesn’t fluoresce at all) and why pink kunzite or fluorite can turn into pale grey or colourless. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nP.S. Bring a specimen or two from your collection!

Local and international samples accepted. No large samples please. \n\n\n\n6:30 PM Meeting \n\n\n\nSpeaker: Jean Dougherty\, Retired Biologist and Geologist and Fossil Expert \n\n\n\nTopic: Fossils of the Ottawa Area \n\n\n\nWe are pleased to announce that Ms. Jean Dougherty will be the presenter at the February 12th meeting of the OVMC and she will be discussing “Fossils of the Ottawa Area”. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJean Dougherty is a retired biologist and geologist who spent her 36 year career with the Geological Survey of Canada.  Her primary role was managing the extensive collections of the GSC\, in particular\, the fossil collections housed in Ottawa.  Dealing with the GSC collections gave her a perspective of the geology both across the country as well as the Ottawa area specifically. Jean will discuss the fossils of the Ottawa area and the geology of their host rocks\, illustrated with specimens from the GSC collection and\, hopefully\, specimens from the collection of the Canadian Museum of Nature as well. If the timing works out\, we may have one or two additional experts on hand to assist in Jean’s presentation and help identify fossils that our members might bring along to the meeting. Hope to see you there! \n\n\n\nWe meet in the Theatre at the Canadian Museum of Nature which is downstairs under the main staircase. No charge for the Museum but if using the Museum parking Lot there is a fee.

SUMMARY:1 or 2 Day Titanite Hill and CN Rock Pile Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Note change in plans to allow those only interested in a 1-day trip to Titanite Hill. Many members have already visited the CN Rock Pile so we have now scheduled Titanite Hill on Monday. \n\n\n\nLocated about 25 minutes from Bancroft\, Titanite Hill is part of the same local geology as the famous\, now closed to the public: Bear Lake Diggings which produced many fine specimens of amphibole and apatite crystals plus others. \n\n\n\nMonday: Titanite Hill\n\n\n\nOn the first day\, we will meet at the Mineral Museum in downtown Bancroft at 10:00 am.\, then proceed to the town of Tory Hill (about 30 minutes) which is close to Titanite Hill. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTitanite Hill has produced wonderful specimens of not only amphiboles and fluoroapatite but also titanite\, biotite\, feldspar\, rare fluoro-richterite\, quartz\, calcite\, and others. \n\n\n\nTitanite Hill parking is down a small road from Tory Hill village with limited spaces so car pooling is advised. Digging\, following calcite veins\, can be done at the bottom of the hill or on the hill but realize past rockhounds have already removed many specimens; however good finds are still happening. The best opportunities for better specimens is now at the top which requires a fairly strenuous uphill climb (no paths so no wagons). Recommended tools are hand rake and trowel to extend past digging. A shovel to remove the surface soil in new digging areas would be very helpful. Even a soil sifter is handy to find smaller specimens caught in the soil. \n\n\n\nBring a lunch and drinks. \n\n\n\nTuesday: CN Rock Pile and Other Exploration Options\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMineral at the CN Rock Pile are very different than Titanite Hill. The rock came from the Golding-Keene Quarry and contains a wide variety including: nepheline\, albite\, peristerite\, biotite\, cancrinite (fluorescent)\, zircons\, graphite\, plagioclase feldspar\, sodalite\, hackmanite (fluorescent) and others. \n\n\n\nWe will meet at 10:00 am at entrance to the CN Rock Pile (Across the street from the Mineral Museum). Parking is right next to the CN Rock Pile so it is very easy to start finding minerals. Since the top of the CN Rock Pile has been picked over\, digging down a little will produce better specimens. A couple of hours at the Rock Pile allows members to get to visit the Museum and two mineral stores: Lakeside Gems and Sodalite Mine (with its Rock Farm). It is fun to visit the CN Rock Pile after dark to see the fluorescent minerals glowing under UV lights (recommended 365 nm). \n\n\n\nNote: You are free to return to Titanite Hill if you would like on Day 2. \n\n\n\nThere are two motels in town that are reasonably priced if staying for the two days.

SUMMARY:Miller Property Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:The Miller Property includes the Smart Mine established around 1880. Apatite was the main target because of its phosphate used as fertilizer. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe main minerals that can be found are apatite\, fluorapatite\, calcite\, biotite\, microcline felspar\, amazonite\, titanite and zircon. \n\n\n\nParking is fairly close to the diggings although low cars may want to park a little further away. It can be quite damp after a rain at the Miller Property which will increase mosquitos so come prepared. See our Blog Article for tools and what to bring: Gearing Up: Must-Have Tools for the Aspiring Rockhound. \n\n\n\nThere is an attendee limit of 25 members. Parking is limited so lets try to carpool.

SUMMARY:Craigmont Corundum Mine Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:In the late 1800s\, corundum was discovered near Combermere and soon after the Craigmont Corundum Mine was established. It was a large enterprise employing over 400 men in 1906. \n\n\n\nJoin our “expedition” and a leading expert for a unique collecting experience and discover the 2nd hardest mineral next to diamonds. Corundum is 9 on the Mohs scale. Ruby and sapphire are actually corundum. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe main mineral being sought at Craigmont is corundum but the following may also be discovered: biotite\, magnetite\, mica\, molybdenite\, pyrite\, smoky quartz and scapolite and others. \n\n\n\nCraigmont involves walking up a trail that is not too long. Where we are collecting will be somewhat open so bugs won’t be too bad. It is a huge property – basically\, a whole mountain where there are mine dumps; however\, past the collecting area\, there are large boulders and potential for falls – so be careful. \n\n\n\nSee our Blog Article for tools and what to bring: Gearing Up: Must-Have Tools for the Aspiring Rockhound. Because you may want to break open rocks\, a short-handled sledge hammer would be advantageous. \n\n\n\nBONUS: the OVMC has asked Chris Fouts to be our guide\, Chris is a well-known Bancroft geologist and is extremely knowledgeable with the area. He has been to the Craigmont Mine already this year so can help all members find good specimens. \n\n\n\nWe will meet up with Chris at the Country Store in McArthur Mills on Highway 28 at 10:00 am and follow him to the mineral collecting area (about 20 minutes away) – maps will be provided. It is a little less than 2 hours from Ottawa. \n\n\n\nPrice: $15 per adult member. Kids are free.

DESCRIPTION:5:30 PM Mineral Identification and Kids Corner \n\n\n\n“Rock Doctor” Clinic: Starts at 5:30\, ends at 6 PM. Members are free to bring in a reasonable number of samples or specimens to be identified by the expert mineralogists in the club. This has been a very popular activity for the membership (at times exceeding our capacity to deal with everyone present!). \n\n\n\n“Kids Corner”: We will now be having a table set aside for children to learn the basics of mineral identification and other related activities. Thank you to Tara Conroy for setting this up! \n\n\n\n6:00 PM Meeting \n\n\n\nStudent Research Night \n\n\n\nTwo OVMC members who are graduate students in geology at the University of Ottawa will describe their field studies and research results so far on their M.Sc. thesis projects. Jack Halloran is studying the Valeriano Cu-Au porphyry-type deposit in northern Chile. Kelsie Ojaste is working on the giant ore deposits in Sudbury and will talk about “Understanding the role of volatiles in Sudbury’s abundant Ni-Cu-PGE deposits using petrography and geochemistry”. Come out and support our student members and see what great work student researchers are doing these days! \n\n\n\nLocation and Directions: Canadian Museum of Nature\, 240 McLeod St.\, Ottawa. Enter through the main entrance and turn left\, go to the end of the hall past the cafeteria

\n\n\n\n6:00 PM Meeting \n\n\n\nSpeaker Dr. Paula Piilonen\, Research Scientist\, Mineralogy Dept.\, Canadian Museum of Nature \n\n\n\nTopic:  The Ice River Alkaline Complex\, southeastern British Columbia \n\n\n\nTopic Details: The Ice River Alkaline Complex\, 23 km south of Field\, British Columbia\, is a J-shaped\, multiphase intrusion comprised of highly alkaline rocks – carbonatite\, ijolite\, nepheline syenite\, and numerous post-intrusive dikes. It is host to at least 92 different minerals including fine examples of relatively rare minerals such as ancylite-(Ce)\, edingtonite\, natrolite\, and catapleiite\, as well as abundant sodalite. For the last 2 years\, Dr. Piilonen and a team from the Canadian Museum of Nature\, partnered with Chris Robak of Silver Cove Minerals\, have undertaken expeditions to this mineralogically important locality in order to study the late-stage pegmatites in the Moose Creek Valley. Paula will share her experience discovering and collecting minerals from a new type of pegmatite and her discoveries back in the lab. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speaker: Dr. Paula Piilonen is a research scientist in the Mineralogy Section at the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa where she has worked for the last 23 years. She completed a B.Sc. in geology at Laurentian University (1997)\, a Ph.D. in Earth Sciences at the University of Ottawa (2001)\, and a post-doctoral fellowship at Université de Marne-la-Vallée (France\, 2002) before starting with the Museum in 2002. Her work is focused on the mineralogy\, crystal chemistry and behavior of rare elements in alkaline systems\, in particular the minerals that are formed during late-stage autometasomatic or hydrothermal processes. Her fieldwork has spanned the globe\, from Mont Saint-Hilaire to Norway\, Thailand and Cambodia\, Baffin Island and British Columbia. She lives in rural Dunrobin on the Ottawa River with her husband\, Reni. She is an avid squash player\, a certified Muay Thai instructor\, enjoys mountain biking\, kayaking and fishing on the Ottawa River but more likely can be found relaxing on the deck with an adult beverage watching the sunsets. \n\n\n\nLocation and Directions: Canadian Museum of Nature\, 240 McLeod St.\, Ottawa.
