Members are free to bring in a reasonable number of samples or specimens to be identified by the expert mineralogists in the club. This has been a very popular activity for the membership (at times exceeding our capacity to deal with everyone present!). \n“Swap Shop”: Calling all collectors! The OVMC Swap Shop is open for all members (adults and children). Mike and Tara will have several treasures to trade including small crystals\, fossils\, polished rocks and the occasional plastic dino!  Donations towards the Swap collection is appreciated! Local and international samples accepted. No large samples please. \n6:10 PM Door Prizes \n6:20 PM Pinch Award Presentation \n\n\nIn recognition of his many contributions to the science of mineralogy\, Quintin Wight has been awarded the Pinch Medal by the Mineralogical Association of Canada (The MAC) and this prestigious award will be presented to Quintin in a brief ceremony at the May 14th meeting of the OVMC. Last year\, our own Michael Bainbridge\, Curator of Mineralogy at the Canadian Museum of Nature won the Carnegie Mineralogical Award so that’s two in a row for members of the OVMC!\n\n\n\n6:30 PM Meeting \nSpeaker: Col (Ret) Quintin Wight\, CD\, MA and World-Renowned Micromounter \nTopic: The Scientific Value of Micromounting \n\n\nFor a long time micromounters have felt rather scorned by the collectors of large\, showy pieces who spend thousands of dollars on their collections. Museum curators also tend to dislike micromounts because they are difficult to display. This talk demonstrates that micromounters have every reason to be proud of their accomplishments\, and introduces some of the people and institutions that are keeping the science of mineralogy alive and up to date through micromounting. In the last few years\, micromounters have discovered more than 270 new mineral species. How many have the cabinet collectors found?\nRhodochrosite from Mt. St. Hilaire\n\nRhodochrosite 70x Magnification\n\nOur speaker is the illustrious Mr. Quintin Wight\, one of the world’s premier experts in the field of micro-minerals\, those mineral specimens which are only readily visible under a microscope and are often more spectacular in their form than the minerals large enough to be seen without magnification.  Quintin has been a mineral collector\, micromounter and photomicrographer for more than 50 years. During that time\, he has published more than 200 articles\, on mineral subjects. He has also given more than 205 presentations to mineral groups across North America\, and in England\, Belgium\, Italy\, Switzerland\, Tanzania\, and New Zealand. Inducted to the Micromounters’ Hall of Fame in 1990\, he now coordinates that organization on behalf of the Baltimore Mineral Society. His book\, The Complete Book of Micromounting\, was published in 1993\, and the mineral quintinite was named in his honor in 1997.\n\n\n  \n\n

Striking brilliant colours are what make minerals so captivating and sought after. Yet\, sometimes\, the colour fades. In this talk we will explore the origins of colours and colour change in minerals. Some examples include why calcite fluoresces in a wide range of colours (but\, sometimes\, doesn’t fluoresce at all) and why pink kunzite or fluorite can turn into pale grey or colourless. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nP.S. Bring a specimen or two from your collection!

No large samples please. \n\n\n\n6:30 PM Meeting \n\n\n\nSpeaker: Jean Dougherty\, Retired Biologist and Geologist and Fossil Expert \n\n\n\nTopic: Fossils of the Ottawa Area \n\n\n\nWe are pleased to announce that Ms. Jean Dougherty will be the presenter at the February 12th meeting of the OVMC and she will be discussing “Fossils of the Ottawa Area”. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJean Dougherty is a retired biologist and geologist who spent her 36 year career with the Geological Survey of Canada.  Her primary role was managing the extensive collections of the GSC\, in particular\, the fossil collections housed in Ottawa.  Dealing with the GSC collections gave her a perspective of the geology both across the country as well as the Ottawa area specifically. Jean will discuss the fossils of the Ottawa area and the geology of their host rocks\, illustrated with specimens from the GSC collection and\, hopefully\, specimens from the collection of the Canadian Museum of Nature as well. If the timing works out\, we may have one or two additional experts on hand to assist in Jean’s presentation and help identify fossils that our members might bring along to the meeting. Hope to see you there! \n\n\n\nWe meet in the Theatre at the Canadian Museum of Nature which is downstairs under the main staircase. No charge for the Museum but if using the Museum parking Lot there is a fee.

DESCRIPTION:5:30 PM Mineral Identification and Kids Corner \n\n\n\n“Rock Doctor” Clinic: Starts at 5:30\, ends at 6 PM. Members are free to bring in a reasonable number of samples or specimens to be identified by the expert mineralogists in the club. This has been a very popular activity for the membership (at times exceeding our capacity to deal with everyone present!). \n\n\n\n“Kids Corner”: We will now be having a table set aside for children to learn the basics of mineral identification and other related activities. Thank you to Tara Conroy for setting this up! \n\n\n\n6:00 PM Meeting \n\n\n\nMineral Auction (cash please) \n\n\n\nSpeaker: Michael Bainbridge\, Assistant Curator of Mineralogy\, Canadian Museum of Nature \n\n\n\nTopic: Grenville Geological Province Night \n\n\n\nThe complex metamorphic rocks of the Grenville geological province host many of the famous mineral localities of SE Ontario and western Quebec\, including the Otter Lake apatite mine\, the Miller property titanite-apatite\, the numerous occurrences at Bancroft and Madoc\, and hundreds more. We are planning a brief review of the geology of the Grenville followed by hands-on demonstrations of the sometimes confusing rocks and minerals found in this terrane. This will be a great opportunity for all of us to improve our skill in identifying and understanding Grenville rocks and minerals. \n\n\n\nLocation and Directions: Canadian Museum of Nature\, 240 McLeod St.\, Ottawa. Enter through the main entrance and turn left\, go to the end of the hall past the cafeteria

Thank you to Tara Conroy for setting this up! \n\n\n\n6:00 PM Meeting \n\n\n\nSpeaker Dr. Paula Piilonen\, Research Scientist\, Mineralogy Dept.\, Canadian Museum of Nature \n\n\n\nTopic:  The Ice River Alkaline Complex\, southeastern British Columbia \n\n\n\nTopic Details: The Ice River Alkaline Complex\, 23 km south of Field\, British Columbia\, is a J-shaped\, multiphase intrusion comprised of highly alkaline rocks – carbonatite\, ijolite\, nepheline syenite\, and numerous post-intrusive dikes. It is host to at least 92 different minerals including fine examples of relatively rare minerals such as ancylite-(Ce)\, edingtonite\, natrolite\, and catapleiite\, as well as abundant sodalite. For the last 2 years\, Dr. Piilonen and a team from the Canadian Museum of Nature\, partnered with Chris Robak of Silver Cove Minerals\, have undertaken expeditions to this mineralogically important locality in order to study the late-stage pegmatites in the Moose Creek Valley. Paula will share her experience discovering and collecting minerals from a new type of pegmatite and her discoveries back in the lab. \n\n\n\nAbout our Speaker: Dr. Paula Piilonen is a research scientist in the Mineralogy Section at the Canadian Museum of Nature in Ottawa where she has worked for the last 23 years. She completed a B.Sc. in geology at Laurentian University (1997)\, a Ph.D. in Earth Sciences at the University of Ottawa (2001)\, and a post-doctoral fellowship at Université de Marne-la-Vallée (France\, 2002) before starting with the Museum in 2002. Her work is focused on the mineralogy\, crystal chemistry and behavior of rare elements in alkaline systems\, in particular the minerals that are formed during late-stage autometasomatic or hydrothermal processes. Her fieldwork has spanned the globe\, from Mont Saint-Hilaire to Norway\, Thailand and Cambodia\, Baffin Island and British Columbia. She lives in rural Dunrobin on the Ottawa River with her husband\, Reni. She is an avid squash player\, a certified Muay Thai instructor\, enjoys mountain biking\, kayaking and fishing on the Ottawa River but more likely can be found relaxing on the deck with an adult beverage watching the sunsets. \n\n\n\nLocation and Directions: Canadian Museum of Nature\, 240 McLeod St.\, Ottawa.
