SUMMARY:Long Lake Zinc Mine Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:The Long Lake Zinc Mine (Sometimes called the Richardson Mine) started in 1897 with a number of mining operations in the early and mid 1900s focusing on zinc and lead ores. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMinerals that can be found in the mine dumps (as shown above) are: calcite\, chalcopyrite\, diopside\, galena\, hydrozincite\, molybdenite\, pyrite\, pyrrhotite\, quartz\, sphalerite (Italics: fluorescent minerals). \n\n\n\nWe will have dark boxes to view fluorescent minerals. \n\n\n\nParking is very close to the site. \n\n\n\nSee our Blog Article for tools and what to bring: Gearing Up: Must-Have Tools for the Aspiring Rockhound. \n\n\n\nMore news will be provided in the coming weeks.

SUMMARY:Yates Mine Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:The Yates Mine was originally worked in 1906-07 for mica and fluorite and later in the 40’s and 50’s for fluorite and uranothorite. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPossible minerals to be uncovered are: allanite\, apatite\, calcite\, diopside\, fluorite\, microcline\, molybdenite\, phlogopite mica\, pyroxene\, scapolite thorianite\, titanite\, tremolite and zircon. \n\n\n\nThere is a 20-25 minute walk through the woods on an uneven road slightly uphill. A dolly may help lighten the load on the way out. \n\n\n\nSee our Blog Article for tools and what to bring: Gearing Up: Must-Have Tools for the Aspiring Rockhound.

SUMMARY:Beryl Pit Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:The Beryl Pit is an open pit with a large field of mine dump material that has been bulldozed for easier finding. Originally\, beryl was discovered in 1897 then the mine opened in the 1920s. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThere are a variety of minerals that can be found here including beryl\, pyrite\, columbite\, euxenite\, tourmaline\, fluorite\, various quartz\, aquamarine\, mica\, feldspar including albite peristerite (moonstone)\, allanite and many more. Most of these were formed in a granite pegmatite about 1.2 billion years ago up to 20 km deep under the Grenville mountains which have all eroded away. \n\n\n\nWe will meet at the Quadeville Grocery Store at 10:00 am and then proceed by car to the Beryl Pit parking area. There is a 0.75 km walk to the collecting area which is fairly open. Bring lunch\, water and mosquito repellant. There are no washrooms at the Pit but Quadeville does have a public washrooms. \n\n\n\nThere are two collecting approaches: \n\n\n\n\nEasy: Digging and raking through the mine dumps which is mainly loose soil mixed with minerals\n\n\n\nChallenging: Using a sledge or chisels to break open big rocks to find fresh mineral specimens.\n\n\n\n\nSee our Blog Article for tools and what to bring: Gearing Up: Must-Have Tools for the Aspiring Rockhound \n\n\n\nThe owners of the Beryl Pit charge the following fees which we will collect in advance: \n\n\n\n\nAdult – $20.00\n\n\n\nStudent – $15.00\n\n\n\nChildren under 6 – Free\n\n\n\n\nPlease note\, if paying by credit or debit card\, there is a $1.00 fee for card processing. \n\n\n\nThere is a limit of 40 attendees.
