SUMMARY:Burgess Mine and Logan Cuts Field Trip - Cancelled
DESCRIPTION:This trip has been cancelled. The owners of Burgess Mine no longer allow mineral collecting because of some past rockhounding people left garbage and did not respect the property. \nThe Burgess Mine and Logan Cuts is part of the same mountainous area as the Craigmont Corundum Mine.  We can drive to the Burgess workings (close by parking area) and try to find corundum and other minerals.  After an hour or two of local exploration\, those up for a challenge will hike about 2.5 km on a rough wagon trail to Logan Cuts which has much better potential for good corundum finds.  This trip will be lead by Chris Fouts\, Bancroft Geologist\, who is very familiar with the area. \nThe rocks found here are syenitic gneisses & pink/red syenite pegmatite which contain spindle-like crystals.  Corundum was mined in the early 1900’s.  Other minerals that can be found are:  magnetite\, allanite\, biotite\, epidote\, muscovite\, pyrite and pyroxene.  Less common finds would be rutile\, calcite\, scapolite\, titanite\, uraninite and zircon. \n  \nNote:  There is a pond near the Burgess dumps so parents must take close care of younger children.  As well\, the walk to Logan Cuts is not recommended for young children since it is uphill and lengthy. \nThe corundum crystals are often embedded in matrix in larger rocks/boulders although pieces may be found relatively easy.  A good rock hammer or even a hand sledge with chisel is advised to produce carry-out sizes.  A hand rake also is handy.  Since you are along way from the cars\, bring lots of water. \nWe will meet at MacArthur Mills at 10:00 am and proceed in a convoy from there. \nPrice:  $20/adult. \n
